Factions
Ordo Ira Dei: aka, the Order. The Ordo Ira Dei is the answer to occultic atrocities being committed in secret workrooms around the world--it is a group of scientific and religious minds brought together in order to combat these dark atrocities. They employ their own weird rituals, unbending traditions, sacrifices, and witch hunts in the ideology to restrict unauthorized research, experimentation, and exploration of the Void. While they have existed for ages prior, they did not truly come into the light until the Great War (WWI) when such secret and dark endeavors by a slowly forming group of like-minded individuals became highly active and discovered for their heinous activities. The Order became organized to fight this problem; however, along the way they became as brutal and vicious as their enemies and now many look to them with fear rather than hopeful guidance.
The Organization: aka, the ORG. The Organization is the Order's specially trained investigation and hunting units. They are trained to handle occultists and demons in combat. They are comprised of orphans and trained from a very young age, encouraged to hate those that abandoned them and left with the desire to seek revenge. Benedict was raised and trained by the Organization. His unit consisted of Rat, Owl, Rhino, and Wasp. He was their Fox.
Inquisitors: The Inquisitors, chosen from among the select few of the most devoted veterans of the Order, are the Order's most powerful weapon. They are elite fighters, ruthless interrogators; and their immense faith is overshadowed only by their inexhaustible loyalty to the Order. On their way to the top, many of them suffered tremendously, both physically and mentally. Often without them even noticing. In the course of his last case, Benedict had run-ins with two Inquisitors: Demetrious, who attempted to hunt down Benedict relentlessly to capture or, more likely, to kill him; and Tomás, who arrived at the house claiming he was there for personal reasons and who almost befriended Benedict before his betrayal came to light.
The First Circle: aka, the Circle. Cultists and magicians, illusionists and shamans, alchemists and witches had no singular voice and no means to defend themselves from the Order before the First Circle was formed proper. This was the first time in recorded history that they formed an alliance. They were the first, as they claim, to discover an alternate dimension, which the Order to this day believes is hell. The founding members of the First Circle embraced this dimension and called it Limbo--the first out of nine circles.
Note: The Ordo Ira Dei and the First Circle are very closely related, and it is very likely that the two factions used to collaborate and/or share members until their main views and guiding principles diverged, causing them to divert down differing paths. The Order became intent on protecting humanity from darkness and demons via heavy restrictions and enforced order, while the Circle simply wanted to research it without interference no matter the cost and the means were not questioned (making them a bit on the chaotic side). Of course, in the end both factions ended up with individuals that meant well and others that did not care who they hurt along the way, resulting in the truth being that only their ideology and believes differed rather than one faction being intrinsically good with the other intrinsically evil.
Enemies
Rat: A quick scout of the Organization. His melee attacks with the blackjack can stun Benedict. He also uses explosives when the need arises.
Owl: A sharpshooter. Usually trying to keep her distance from enemies. Whenever Rat or Rhino are nearby, she may try to find cover behind them. Typically uses a rifle but will switch to a shotgun for close range. Uses smoke bombs to disappear and reposition when needed.
Rhino: His weapon of choice is his massive shield. He often acts as a guard for the other ORG members. Whenever deprived of his shield, he may charge to attack with his bare fists instead.
The Inquisitor (Demetrious): The Inquisitor of Ordo Ira Dei is a tough one. A hunter. In the early stages he is practically immune to Benedict's attacks. After some careful observations a flaw in his defense could be found, but one still has to be very cautious. He is a demented and ruthless opponent that is capable of many dark art attacks.
Tomás de Fernandez: Another Inquisitor of the Order. The sharpest weapon of the Order, he is a man full of compassion but not pity. He comes to the von Bothmer manor on personal matters and at first seems content to leave Benedict to his case while he attends his own business. However, his true intentions are later revealed. Benedict fights him a handful of times throughout his adventure. Tomás is capable of many dark art attacks and is a considerable foe, much worse than the other Inquisitor, for both his power and his tactical mind make him a much greater threat.
Bestiary
Disquiet: The Disquiet is a malevolent demon that feeds off human anxiety and dread. It often targets individuals who are already experiencing emotional turmoil, such as those who have recently experience a trauma or loss. It is a flying creature that is colored in purples to pinkish-reds and attacks by either diving down upon Benedict or shooting a projectiles at him from above.
Nest: The Nest is a birthing pod for Disquiets, where they multiply and then spawn onto the mind of their victims. It is a large vaguely insectoid beast in appearance; on its back is a large sack, the nest, and its head is nothing more than a tube with a circular mouth filled with rows of sharp appendages where it spits out the Disquiets at Ben when he approaches. They will also perform a maul attack when he gets up close.
Torment: The Torment is a relentless demon, chasing after any slither of happiness and joy of its victims and then destroying it. It doesn't feed on happiness or joy however, only on what comes in their place after they are gone: sorrow and misery. They are long quadrupeds almost dog-like but with long heads which split open in four parts into long tendrils and tongues; they attack by spitting projectiles at long range or rearing back and then mauling when Ben engages in close-range combat.
Parasite: The Parasite is a rather small demon, but dangerous in large packs. It is somewhat like a two-legged flea if such things were the size of dogs with nothing but a sharp-toothed mouth for a body-head hybrid. They leap from afar with their powerful legs and try to chomp down on Benedict when he fights them. They will try to surround him when found in packs.
Reflection: As much as a mirror feeds on the image, the Reflection feeds off people's emotions. Most of them are humanoid beasts with long limbs, sharp claws on their hands, and eerie inhuman faces. The Reflection does, however, have a few different variants. The base species looks most like a deformed human that attacks with wild swings of its arms; it can enter an enraged state if not finished off quickly in a battle. Another form of the Reflection is sleeker, with deadly blades on its forearms rather than hands and attacks much more quickly and ruthlessly than its other versions. Yet another form is bigger and stronger, with enlarged boulder-like fists that it uses to pummel with abandon. The Reflection is one of more formidable foes of Limbo, second only to the more gargantuan beasts that roam the dimension.
Lethargy: A vile, sickly mass of concentrated Ink. Formed into a human-like abomination. Like phlegm in a lung, it sticks to the mind. The Lethargy is a very slow enemy, although that does not mean it cannot be challenging at times. It is best not to under estimate it, especially when it appears alongside other demons that may distraction from its lethargic presence. It will engage from afar with a spitting attack or violently swing its arms in close range.
Torpor: The Torpor is a curious being. It seems the most passive out of all the demons, yet its presence cannot be ignored. The demons form a connection with the Torpor which provides them with invulnerability for as long as they are attached. Attacking such connected demons is pointless, and one has to dispose of the Torpor first before switching to the other demons. Its appearance somewhat resembles a slightly larger-than-human cocoon that glows red while it attaches itself to other demons, which also take on a reddish shield about them while protected. Curiously, Benedict can also take advantage of its invulnerability connection if he grasps the Torpor with the Companion's tentacles.
The Librarian: [REDACTED]
The Loneliness: [REDACTED]
The Darkness: [REDACTED]
The Mirage: [REDACTED]
The Old Spider: [REDACTED]
Tools:
Bayonet: "Even a simple bloodletting instrument can yield adequate results in the hands of a proficient wielder." Each successful attack charges Benedict's flare gun. It's a bayonet from the World War I era made for melee combat as a long dagger or to fashion upon a firearm for stabbing.
Flare Gun: "To slay from afar does not constitute one a coward. Reluctance to pull the trigger at all does." It requires charging with melee attacks before being able to shoot. An exquisitely crafted work of both gunsmithing and enchantment mastery. A playing field on which the wonders of the modern day technology and the ancient occult knowledge perform together their dance of death.
Amplificator : "A wondrous device that helps me safely reach for the Companion's abililites. Home to a Voidling, a creature that's neither here nor there. A fragile link. A prototype of me."
Flashlight: "Delivering a whit of hope to where there is none." A small electrical appliance used to dispel darkness.
Miracle Water: "He who has health, has hope, and he who has hope, has everything." The refreshing liquid replenishes Benedict's health.
Smoke Bomb: "It's all smoke and mirrors." Used to disappear from battle and reposition without being discovered.
Stoneplate Device: "You can't get blood from a stone." Arcane artifact that temporarily turns its user to stone.
Kogai Pin: "Sometimes a little improvisation is all it takes to turn a simple tool into a constituent of survival." A sharp pointed pin can be used as a lockpick for certain types of doors. When thrown at the enemies it ensnares them.
Conundrum Device: "A mysterious device apparently made by von Bothmer himself. My father seemed to be interested in the device and studied his diaries. The machine itself was made in an opposition to the Enigma. It looks like old Mr. von Bothmer wanted to create a cyphering machine by mixing Cistercian symbols, occult principles, and energy from another dimension. The madman."
Ink: "Some horrid things better be kept confined far from reach. And who knows? Maybe a use will appear for them by doing so." A foul remnant of demon matter encapsulated in an amber-like prison. The Ink was extracted and used by the Tattooist to improve Benedict's connection with the Companion.
Allies:
Harry Houdini: Harry is a good, albeit greedy, soul. An ambiguous figure, he is very favorable to Benedict. Though sometimes it is difficult to say whether that’s true kindness or just for profit. He is an illusionist; a debunker of fraud spiritualists, parapsychologists, and mediums by day, and a confiscated artifacts trader by night. He runs the shop in which Benedict can buy or upgrade items.
Benedict considers Harry his greatest friend, a man whom Benedict met during his youth shortly after he ran away from the Order. He swindled Houdini with a lesser occultist book, selling it to the collector for more than its worth, but soon after became fast friends with the man. Benedict admits that Harry filled the void of Benedict not having kin by placing himself somewhere in between a fatherly figure and a creepy uncle.
The Weaponsmith: An innovator who is new to the magical underworld. He offers the opportunity to upgrade Benedict’s weapons with the help of new technology. In return he wants to explore the world of the occult to improve upon his products. He comes to the mansion at Harry’s request to help fix the amplificator. A tough man with a criminal past; nothing phases or surprises him.
The Tattooist: She is a powerful being, one foot in our world and one walking among the stars. No one knows exactly what her goals are, where or when will she appear and why. Benedict encounters her while exploring Limbo (where she ended up while traveling between dimensions) and helps direct her to our world. She is curious about Benedict’s case and stays until the end of the adventure. She helps with extracting the demonic ink and uses it to tattoo Benedict (whom she calls her canvas), unlocking new abilities for him.
Other:
James Marvin Floyd: Once a passionate renaissance man, now cold and bitter and pursued by the demons of his shady past. Meeting his future wife and enjoying the first years of a successful relationship pulled him through; until the day his wife revealed her desire to have a child. That stress, along with problems at work and in his private research, begin to overwhelm him. He feels cornered and attacked. In surges of anger he retaliates, which ends in acrimonious arguments with his wife.
Benedict is 95% sure that this man is his father when he first set out on his adventure. Inquisitor Tomás does not deny that James is Benedict's father, but even more telling is Harry's confession once Benedict finds evidence of a blackmail plot against his father that included Benedict as the secret against James's new wife. Benedict arrives at the manor to find James dead in the basement and begins his investigation by entering Limbo through the corpse.
The Golem: "For spark to set all ablaze, a breath must be present. For breath to be drawn, the blood must flow. It always begins with blood." Found in the secret workroom of the basement, the golem was an incomplete experiment of James's work. Originally started by von Bothmer, James worked on it in secret once he moved into the house. He thought he could work out the kinks if only he had had the time. It was never completed, but Benedict did find and interact with a version of it within Limbo...
Benedict's Mother: [REDACTED]
We know nothing of Benedict's mother other than she died at childbirth after the ritual was used to create Benedict and the Companion.
Marie Ann Floyd: James's second wife, though she does not know it. Once an energetic and adventurous woman. With time, she accepted a sedentary lifestyle and began preparing for motherhood. Problems with obtaining the permission to have a child, and eventually also biological obstacles, clipped her wings. The stress and arguments with her husband drove her into a depressive state. She keeps her longing for a child alive. She hopes that this will solve the problems in the relationship and give her a new purpose.
Marie attempts to find a way around that which bares her from having a child, even going so far as to try an ancient dark ritual to produce a child. James keeps the ritual away from her out of fear and they have a tumultuous fight over it. Marie leaves the fight feeling abandoned and isolated, and bereft of all hope. Benedict discovers her dead after unlocking further rooms within the house and enters Limbo via her corpse as well to continue his investigation.
The Pure Being: [REDACTED]
Benedict Fox: A self-proclaimed detective with a military background, Benedict Fox was connected at birth to a being from another dimension. Thanks to his bond with the demon, Benedict can dive deep into human memories and observe the surroundings through the eyes of others. It is a gift but also a curse.
Along with his demonic companion, the detective has one night to solve all the puzzles and escape from those who wish to possess his powers.
The Companion: [REDACTED]
True name only suspected by the higher ups of the Ordo Ira Dei and redacted to all other eyes, the Companion is the Voiding, the Eldritch Entity, the demon, that was bonded to Benedict at his birth through a dark, ancient ritual. The Tattooist described the ritual as ancient and evil, and was surprised that Benedict and the Companion survived the process at all. Now, the Companion accompanies Benedict as his ever-present protector, and caring brother.
